Learning English
Many of our students come to PS196Q from another country, where they did not speak English. We welcome everyone and are happy to work with them on acquiring their English level skills in any grade. Our multi-lingual learners (MLLs) attend classes with their English-speaking peers. Depending on their level of English proficiency, they might benefit from push-in support (with the English language teacher going into the student's classroom to support them and other students), or pull-out support (with the learner spending some time in the English language teacher's room for more intensive support). Sometimes, it's a mix of the two.
Whatever the case, our students are lucky to have wonderful ENL (English as a New Language) teachers to help them acclimate to their new country.
The New York City Department of Education has created resources specifically made for MLLs.
